GANKUTSUOU: The Count of Monte Cristo
I went to a free presentation of this film. It is not really a film but a soap opera on TV. I am not sure. But anyways it is a new experience of Anime. The story is basically the same with Alexandre Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo, but very modern and hi-tech. What impressed me most was the way they used texture on every character' clothes and hair, making the scene rich and colorful. On the other hand, the director tells the French story in Japanese style which makes an interesting mixture. I am not so fond of Japanese Anime, but as to this one, I think it is visually and graphically very attractive. By the way, I love The Count of Monte Cristo.
Description from Geneon website:
"This unique adaptation of the legendary novel by Alexandre Dumas is an intense dramatic and visual experience, featuring direction by Mahiro Maeda (The Animatrix, Blue Submarine N.6), costumes by world-renowned Anna Sui, music by Jean-Jacques Burnel (The Stranglers)."
